Clémence Manachère and Polina Pohozha are two musicians from different worlds whose paths crossed in the misty mountains of Italy. There, they spent 34 days at the Casa della Musica San Michele residency, immersing themselves in the practice of free improvisation.
Now living in different countries, they continue to seek points of convergence, dissolving once again into each other’s sound. Blending elements of classical, jazz, and experimental music, their work transforms sound into a living, breathing organism—fluid, unpredictable, and deeply expressive.
Their collaboration is an exploration of textures and timbres, a meeting of structure and chaos, a dialogue of contrasts that becomes something whole. The duo plans to release an EP in 2025/2026, born spontaneously and captured in a single take—in a moment of complete musical unity.
RANGES COLLECTIVE is an ensemble dedicated to free improvisation, avant-garde jazz, electroacoustic exploration, and real-time composition. Formed by Ghazal Faghihi (IR / BE), Polina Pohozha (UA/SE), Clémence Manachère (FR / DE), Giulia Pastorino (IT), Mireia Pellisa (CAT/CH), and Clara Torner (CAT), the group met during a transformative five-week
residency in Montaldeo, Italy — the Ranges residency supported by Culture Moves Europe and the Goethe-Institut, run by Casa della Musica San Michele.
Born from diverse artistic backgrounds — classical, contemporary music, jazz, performance art, and experimental electronics — Ranges Collective operates as an open, evolving platform where sound, gesture, and space interact without hierarchy. Their music exists between genres, cultures, and perspectives. Each member brings her own voice, embracing a sound free from stylistic and personal boundaries. The group explores extended techniques, live processing, and site-specific interaction, creating immersive sound environments and challenging conventional listening. Through co-creation, they developed unique ways of improvising and “practicing”, constantly pushing the boundaries of chamber music dynamics.
Ranges positions itself at the crossroads of free improvisation, experimental music, sound art, and performative research, blurring the lines between composition and improvisation, concert and ritual.
In late 2024, the ensemble performed in Milan (with Conserere and Collettivo_21), Ovada (invited by Due Sotto l’Ombrello), and Montaldeo.
Their debut album will be released in the coming year.
The duo of Ukrainian performers Nataliia Popova (flute, electronics) and Polina Pohozha (piano, organ, viola da gamba, electronics) has been playing together since childhood, understanding the deep connection of communicating through eye contact and performing as one. Their focus is on bringing academic music, improvisation, and electroacoustic music (EAM) together on the same stage, creating inner musical conflict while manipulating and directing new meanings within the musical narrative.
The mission of VARP is exploration and experimentation with the acoustic potential of Gotland's medieval churches through improvised music. Inspired partly by the deep listening concept advocated by Pauline Oliveros, the group focuses on creating improvised and experimental music that responds to and interacts with the qualities of these special spaces. They blend elements of experimental contemporary, classical music and traditional Swedish and Ukrainian music. They recorded 5 albums and was working with american label Right Brain Records.
